You, God, are my God,
earnestly I seek you;
I thirst for you,
my whole being longs for you,
in a dry and parched land
where there is no water.
Psalms 63:1
Father God, we say we want more of you in our lives. But then we allow so much junk to get in the way that we crowd you out. Will you increase in each of us a hunger and a thirst for you.
Lord, would you make us like the psalmist, thirsting for you, longing for you with our whole being. Show each of us what that kind of longing means.
We pray that our churches would become desperate for you. We confess that too often we are too comfortable with how things are that we don’t want to change. Lord, make our churches thirsty for your Holy Spirit.
This world is a parched land, O Lord, in desperate need of the living water of your Holy Spirit. You have called us to be conduits of that living water. Will you fill us and let rivers of living water flow from us.
We thank you that your living water bubbles up in us with joy and with love. Let those who don’t know you, taste and see, through us, how good you are.
We don’t receive the power of the Holy Spirit to keep it for ourselves. When we do that, we become stagnant. Lord, will you wash away the stagnant places within us through your Spirit.
Thank you that you have promised that those who thirst for you will be satisfied. So we choose to seek you, confident that those who seek you, find you.
We ask all this in the name of the one who gives the living water of the Holy Spirit – Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
